For the most part the directions are right on, except when it has us out in the middle of a field.well the display does, we are still on road, but the system sometimes loses track of that. Still, it has gotten us out of a lot of jams so I can't totally fault it. Been using this for a while now and much of the time it works fine, but other times we have all sorts of trouble with the screen freezing, the on screen buttons situating themselves off the screen so that you have to reset it from the back with a very small tool in order to be able to use it correctly. The mount that holds it to the dash or window suddenly loses suction sending the unit tumbling.
Its a shame. But the repair cast was almost the same as buying a new unit, so I just bought a new one after the second unit quit. If it wasn't for the charging problem, I would have givin it 5 stars. I played with several different models my friends have and none were as full featured as the lowrance. Even if you only use it in a car, if the source of power is switched, every time you turn the switch off, you will have to wait for it to acquire a signal again (which can take siginificant time some times). This is my 3rd lowrance.
Its obvious they have a problem with the charging circuit. Now that one has quit charging. I love the way it works and the configurability. At least the first time it quit charging, it was under warrantee. But without a battery, the unit is much less of value. In every one of my units the battery has quit charging so there is no way to use it without having it plugges in.
But this is definitely a major problem.
As far as gps in the car, it does not recognize most the roads where we live and we have not been able to update it. Get a Garmin. My wife bought this for us at Christmas 08 due to a sale at Bass Pro. I would not even think about buying this unit if I were you. Mine will end up at a yard sale I'm sure. It was described as the greatest thing due to all the great crossover details. What we didn't know was that you have to buy most of the things to make this unit usable.
Directions offroad can tell you to go over cliff. If stray from route does not recalculate route. Only good part is the price for size of screen. LEI help links don't work.Tech support is worst I've ever seen. Keeps telling you to make u turn. Topo software roads are approx 100 yds off.
I run if off a cigarette lighter type plug in my boat. The new marine mapping Garmins are nice but also very expensive and so are the charts, one would have to spend ~$600 to get set up with Garmin. The unit has many, many features. The Nautic Path Marine charts are very complete and clear.
I've been a boater for 50 years and this is the best device I have ever had. I mount it on a sandbag type rest and can use it anywhere in the boat. for example after navigating to port, one can go to the information key and find any kind of facility in the nearby town -- restaurants, hotels, repair places -- anything. For a long time I used the Garmin Mariner for by boating navigation which is fine, but a minimal device with no marine charting capacity.
The XOG has a bright adjustable screen, and while it is not good in direct sunlight I bought a sunshade for $9 and it works perfectly. Except for the screen not readable in direct sun without shading, I have not had any of the problems or objections listed in the low review posts here. I wanted to upgrade, but found marine chartplotters outragiously expensive. With this unit I paid $160 for the XOG and found Nautic Path West Coast Marine charts SD card for $87.The XOG has unique software and when accuracy was compared side/side with a Garmin Legend, the XOG was as good or better than the Garmin.
